'The Vampire Diaries' Season 3 Premiere Details: Happy Birthday, Elena

The Vampire Diaries typically gets comparisons to the Twilight series, which might be unfair since, technically, the Vampire Diaries books were published long before Twilight. However, news like this doesn't help.

In an interview with TV Guide Magazine, executive producer Julie Plec revealed that the season 3 premiere will be set on Elena Gilbert's 18th birthday. Fans of Twilight will certainly remember that New Moon began with Bella's 18th birthday.

There's no word on whether an errant paper cut will result in Klaus crashing through the window to attack her, but Plec does reveal that the celebration, like all major events in Mystic Falls, won't go off without a hitch. However, it's nice to see that The Vampire Diaries seems to be accepting the almost comically ridiculous fact that every single episode has to feature some major town or personal event.

Starting the third season of The Vampire Diaries on Elena's 18th birthday is also a smart move because it solves one of the big problems: Elena and Jeremy's lack of a legal guardian. The deaths of Jenna and John at the end of season 2 certainly raised a big issue that the Gilbert kids were running around without anyone taking care of them, but now that Elena's 18, the problem is fixed.

Plec also revealed that the relationship between Elena and Damon will be a season-long endeavor, so don't expect the two to hop in the sack right away now that Stefan is off being evil with Klaus.

Speaking of Evil Stefan, season 3 will also add another new vampire to the show: Rebecca. She's an old friend of Stefan's from his bad days who's happy to see him returning to the dark side.

That sounds like a fun role, and maybe it's just the name, but I think it could be perfect for someone like Dilshad Vadsaria, who played the very cold and calculated Rebecca Logan on ABC Family's Greek. Either that, or they could bring in one of Nina Dobrev's Degrassi co-stars.

The Vampire Diaries season 3 premieres on Thursday, September 15 at 8pm on the CW.

The Vampire Diaries Season 3 Timeline and Casting News

A couple of news items have come out recently regarding the upcoming Season 3 of The CW's popular show "The Vampire Diaries", specifically what the time frame of the new season will be and a new character for us to look forward to.

First up, per TVGuide.com, executive producer Julie Plec explains, "Our first episode is Elena's 18th birthday. There will be a small time jump [from where last season ended] as we celebrate Elena's birthday, but as is the pattern in Mystic Falls, the event never reaches its climax." Elena will now be a senior in high school, but don't bank on a season-ending graduation. Now that she's 18, "Elena and Jeremy technically don't need a parent living in their house [following Aunt Jenna's death]," says Plec. "She will be taking care of herself."

Plec also mentions Rebecca, a yet-to-be-cast vampire from Stefan's "darkest ripper days who loves that Stefan's back to his bad behavior," and touches upon the Elena/Damon dynamic: "Over the course of the season Elena will be struggling with a deep, deep attraction toward Damon. That's going to be a big problem for her."

Speaking of new characters, TVLine broke the news that David Gallagher (pictured above; Super 8's stoner and "7th Heaven"'s Simon) will appear in the first two episodes of the CW hit’s new season. He'll play werewolf Ray Sutton and have a grim run-in with Klaus in Tennessee.

Keep it here for more "The Vampire Diaries" news soon, most likely from next week's San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday, July 23rd.

The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries is an American television series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on the book series of the same name written by L. J. Smith. The series premiered on The CW Television Network on September 10, 2009, and has currently finished its second season on May 12, 2011. The series follows the events in the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional small town haunted by supernatural beings. The main focus of the series is the love triangle between the female protagonist Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and Stefan and Damon with dark pasts. Later the light is thrown on the mysterious past of the town involving Elena's malevolent doppelgänger Katherine who seeks revenge against the town, Stefan, Damon, and Elena.

The pilot episode attracted the largest audience of any series premiere since the network began in 2006. The first season averaged 3.60 million viewers. The show initially received average reviews, but critics agreed that the series improved over the course of the season; the second season premiered to generally favorable reviews. The show has received numerous award nominations, winning a People's Choice Award and seven Teen Choice Awards. On April 26, 2011, The CW renewed the series for a third season, set to begin on September 15, 2011.
